Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered a formal apology for a racist head tax applied to Chinese immigrants between 1885 and 1923. On June 22nd, he offered compensation to surviving Chinese-Canadians who paid the tax, as well as to widows and their children. Harper called the tax a shameful chapter in Canadian history.
