The Canadian government chartered seven ships July 20th to shuttle Canadian citizens out of war-torn Lebanon. Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a stopover in Cyprus following a visit to France, to pick up about a hundred evacuees from Lebanon and fly them home. In an interview with the Canadian Press while waiting for the flight to leave Cyprus, Harper thanked the evacuees for pointing out the evacuation mission's shortcomings. (Foreign Affairs said the evacuation cost the federal government about 76-million dollars.)
