The 16th International AIDS Conference opened August 13th in Toronto. It was attended by more than 30-thousand delegates from 170 countries. The Canadian co-chair of the conference used his speech at the opening ceremonies to slam Prime Minister Harper for slighting the six-day event. But Dr. Mark Wainberg of Montreal praised federal Health Minister Tony Clement, whose speech was drowned out by whistles and screams of, "Where's Stephen Harper?" (Clement and International Co-operation Minister Josee Verner represented the federal government.)
