The federal and Nova Scotia governments announced a 400 million-dollar plan to bury the Sydney tar ponds and coke oven site. Environmentalists and local residents had worried the cleanup would include burning some of the toxic sludge, but that won't happen. Instead, officials said the ponds will be stabilized and solidified. Public Works Minister Michael Fortier said it's the best way to clean up the mess. (The project was expected to take seven years to complete.)
