The RCMP charged a senior Finance department official with criminal breach of trust. They allege Serge Nadeau, a director general in the tax policy branch of the department, used confidential information about income trusts for personal financial gain. An investigation began when Ralph Goodale, then the Liberal finance minister, announced that the government had decided not to tax income trusts. On February 15th, Goodale said he was relieved to be cleared of any wrongdoing. (Upon completion of the investigation, Nadeau was the only person charged.)
