Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced new measures to defend Canada's Arctic sovereignty. Speaking at CFB Esquimalt on July 9th, Harper announced the construction of patrol ships that will be vital to Canada's North. Harper claimed the steel-reinforced hulls would be able to patrol the length of the Northwest Passage and guard its approaches year-round.
