Trooper Michael Hayakaze (hy-ah-KAH'-zee) was killed March 2nd by a roadside bomb in Panjwaii district, 45 kilometers west of Kandahar, Afghanistan. Hayakaze's commanding officer said the 25-year-old had spent most of his time with the Lord Strathcona's Horse's regiment training for deployment to the war-torn country. Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Demers said Hayakaze was committed to the mission. (Hayakaze was the 79th Canadian soldier to die in the war-torn country since 2002.)
