The federal government seized the flagship of an anti-sealing group April 12th to protect Canadian sealers. Federal Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn said the Farley Mowat and its crew had received several warnings and charges. Hearn said it was finally time to act. (A week earlier, the Fisheries Department brought forward charges alleging the Farley Mowat's captain and chief officer were too close to the annual East Coast seal hunt. The captain was also charged with obstruction or hindrance of a Fishery Officer or inspector.)
