General Rick Hillier announced April 15th that he'd be stepping down after more than three years as chief of defense staff. Hillier said he and former Defense Minister Gordon O'Connor worked well together to meet the needs of the Canadian Forces. At a news conference announcing his resignation, Hillier denied having any serious problems with political leaders in Ottawa. It was widely believed that friction between O'Connor and Hillier had led to the removal of the Defense Minister.
