After 30 years in politics, veteran NDP MP Alexa McDonough announced she'd be leaving federal politics with the call of the federal election. She said it was time for a new generation to tackle the challenges Canada faces. McDonough said she intended to remain active in the social causes that matter most to her -- both in Halifax and on the national scene. (June 2nd marked the 11th anniversary of McDonough's first election to the House of Commons. She led the federal NDP from 1995 to 2003, and in the 1997 election increased the party's seat count from nine to 21, including six MPs from Nova Scotia.)
