Ontario health officials announced an outbreak of listeriosis on August 22nd. A connection was made between confirmed cases across Canada and the recall of dozens of deli meats produced by Maple Leaf Foods. The company at one point issued a recall of almost all the products produced at a Toronto plant. Health Minister Tony Clement said once federal officials were aware of the situation, they acted quickly. (The listeriosis outbreak claimed 20 lives across Canada. The president of Maple Leaf Foods said the company identified two identical slicing machines as the most likely source of the deadly outbreak.)
