Michael Lauder, a financial agent for the Conservative Party's riding in Whitehorse, said Nielsen felt strongly about the region he represented. (Nielsen won the Yukon's Progressive Conservative nomination in 1957 and never lost an election, holding his seat until resigning in 1987. He was 84.)
