Montreal's archbishop, Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, renounced his Order of Canada. The 72-year-old Turcotte was protesting the appointment of abortion provider Dr. Henry Morgentaler the prestigious membership. Cardinal Turcotte said he'd hoped the controversy surrounding Morgentaler's naming to the Order last July would prompt officials to reverse their decision. But that didn't happen. (Turcotte, who received the honor in 1996, said he could no longer stay on the sidelines because he believed his silence could be misinterpreted. )
