The Ontario government issued a sweeping apology October 1st in the wake of a judicial inquiry report. Justice Stephen Goudge's report came down hard on former child pathologist Doctor Charles Smith as well as the province's former chief coroner and his deputy. Attorney General Chris Bentley said a process for compensating those affected by Smith's work would be established and there would be a review of more than 200 baby deaths dating back to 1981. (The public inquiry was launched after it emerged that Charles Smith, formerly the province's chief pediatric pathologist, had made grievous errors in 20 child autopsies between 1991 and 2001. Smith's findings led to several people being wrongfully branded as child murderers.)
