For the first time ever, Ontario joined the list of Canada's have-not provinces, paving the way for it to receive payments from the federal equalization scheme. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced that Ontario would start collecting in 2009. He said the province will get 347 million dollars because of its faltering economy. (Nova Scotia, News Brunswick, PEI, Quebec and Manitoba will also receive transfer payments. )
