Jean Pelletier, a close confidant of former prime minister Jean Chretien, died of cancer on January 10th at the age of 73. Pelletier, who was also a former mayor of Quebec City, was dubbed the "elegant executioner." He served as Chretien's chief of staff for 11 years. Chretien said hiring Pelletier was one of the best decisions he ever made. (Pelletier was implicated in the federal sponsorship scandal but a Federal Court cleared him in June, 2008.)
