The House of Commons passed a federal budget amendment the Liberals had demanded in order for them to support the budget itself. MP's voted 214 to 84 in favor of the budget amendment with the NDP and Bloc Québécois voting against it. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty defended the budget measure that would alter federal payments to Newfoundland and Labrador. Flaherty told the Commons he made the changes in the interests of the entire country, and appealed to all provinces to "be reasonable." (Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff warned the budget could still be defeated in the future if progress reports showed it wasn't doing enough to help the economy.)
