Bombardier Aerospace announced on January 5th that it would lay off 1,360 workers, including more than 700 in the Montreal area. That amounted to about 4.5 per cent of the company's total workforce. Bombardier cited a drop in orders for business jets. Bombardier spokesman Marc Duchesne said the company was bracing for volatility. (Bombardier said it hoped to offset the layoffs by hiring more than 800 permanent employees for some of its new aircraft projects like the C-Series and Learjet 85.)
