The slow death of 500 ducks on a toxic oilsands tailings pond in northern Alberta in April, 2008 led to federal and provincial charges February 9th against Syncrude Canada. Alberta Environment Minister Rob Renner announced the provincial charges carried a maximum fine of 500-thousand dollars. Syncrude attempted to rescue some of the ducks that landed in the tailings pond, but only a handful were taken out of the water for cleaning and none of the birds survived.
