A woman in northern Alberta was confirmed as Canada's first swine-flu death on May 8th. Health officials said the woman had underlying health conditions, but believed the virus may have been a contributing factor in her death. Doctor Andre Corriveau (KOHR'-ih-voh), the province's chief medical health officer, said it was only after one of the woman's relatives tested positive for the illness that they considered testing the dead woman's tissues for the virus. (Nurses were dispatched to the unidentified community where the dead woman lived to monitor residents for signs of flu-like symptoms.)
