A new era at the Canada-US border, the world's longest undefended border, formally began June 1st as travelers to the US, including American citizens, were required to show a passport before making the crossing. Border official Tom Schreiber said enforcement would initially focus on people who were not carrying the proper documents, such as criminals and illegal migrants. (Travelers without proper documents were not turned away at the border. Instead, they were given warnings and information on what documents to carry in future.)
