An aboriginal leader from British Columbia became the new national voice for First Nations people July 23rd after a marathon election with eight rounds of voting. Shawn Atleo was sworn in as the new grand chief of the Assembly of First Nations as aboriginal chanting wafted in the background. He told reporters he intended to push the federal government to live up to its obligations. (Atleo is the first AFN national leader from British Columbia since 1976. He won the election to replace long-time AFN leader Phil Fontaine.)
