Twenty-one-year-old Private Patrick Lormand of the 2nd Battalion, Royal 22nd Regiment based in Quebec City, was killed and four others were injured September 13th by a roadside bomb near Kandahar City in Afghanistan. Task Force Commander Brigadier General Jonathan Vance said Lormand believed in the mission and was making a difference. (A column that ran in a number of newspapers by Colin Kenny, the chair of the Senate Committee on National Security and Defense, called the Afghan mission futile and described it as Canada's Vietnam.)
