On October 1st, the House of Commons voted 144-117 against a Liberal motion to bring down the minority Conservatives. The Liberals and Bloc Quebecois supported the motion while the Tories opposed it and the NDP abstained. Earlier, during a passionate speech on the confidence motion, Michael Ignatieff unleashed a blistering broadside on the Tories as to why the government was not worthy of survival. Prime Minister Stephen Harper later shrugged off the criticism. (Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff warned that the Tories could change Canada beyond recognition.)
