The federal Conservatives suspended Parliament until after the Winter Olympics. The December 30th move prompted cries of foul from all opposition parties. Liberal Opposition critic Bob Rae said Prime Minister Stephen Harper was setting a bad democratic precedent. (The Tories said they needed to make a clean break and reboot Parliament with the economy no longer in crisis. But the opposition argued that the suspension was a ploy to avoid questions about the handling of Afghan detainees and climate change.)
