Haiti was devastated on January 12th by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake. The quake struck 16 kilometers west of the capital of Port-au-Prince, almost decimating the city. Buildings and infrastructure were heavily damaged. Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said it was a grave concern that thousands of Canadians were on the island. (Prime Minister Stephen Harper declared Canada was ready to provide assistance to the people of Haiti during their time of need.)
