Federal NDP leader Jack Layton announced on February 5th that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He broke the news to party members and then spoke at a Toronto news conference. Layton said that just like his father, who also had prostate cancer -- he would beat the disease. (He told supporters after a medical checkup on July 6th that doctors were "really happy" with his progress.)
