The last known surviving Canadian veteran from the First World War died February 18th at his home in Spokane, Washington. John Babcock was 109 years old. In an interview with The Canadian Press in 2007, Babcock said he never actually stepped onto the battlefield, but he wished the army hadn't stopped him from fighting because he was just 16 when he signed up. (About 60 thousand Canadians died on the battlefields of Europe during the First World War and three times that number were wounded.)
