A Montreal man described by the FBI as one of the most prolific movie pirates in North America received a landmark sentence. Geremi Adam was sentenced to two and a half months after being convicted under tough new camcording laws introduced by the Conservatives in 2007. Crown prosecutor Josee Belanger said it appeared to be the first time someone had been given a jail sentence for such a crime. (With time already served on an unrelated charge, Adam did only just over another week behind bars before being released. He died just days later, on April 4th. The exact cause of death was not confirmed.)
