Preview Clip

On the eve of the two-day G8 meeting in Halifax, International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda confirmed Canada wouldn't support funding for abortions in the developing world as part of a family planning initiative. It threatened a bid to find a consensus at the meeting. But Oda insisted Canada's position would not put it at odds with other industrialized nations, including the US. (The US and other G8 countries had said abortion could not be separated from family planning. But at the end of the meeting, Oda said development ministers agreed they should have flexibility in determining the best way to improve the health of mothers and young children in developing countries.)
