A number of towns from Alberta to Manitoba declared states of emergency on June 18th as torrential rains turned creeks into raging rivers. About 75 homes were evacuated in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan -- while another 20 homes were evacuated in Irvine, Alberta. Boats and helicopters were sent out to rescue stranded residents. Karen Hamerton of the Irvine Fire Department said homeless residents headed to shelters. (A section of the Trans-Canada Highway was closed due to flooding, forcing motorists to take a 200-kilometre detour. The highway did not reopen until June 27th.)
