Some British Columbians headed south to dodge paying the Harmonized Sales Tax that went into effect on Canada Day. At the Pacific border crossing south of Vancouver, Dennis Mayer estimated he'd save hundreds of dollars shopping in the US during his month-long holiday. And he was still holding out hope a grassroots anti-HST petition would have an impact. (Campaigners said more than 700-thousand people had signed the petition. The groundswell of opposition eventually forced the BC Liberal government to announce a referendum on the tax and even forced the resignation of Premier Gordon Campbell. Ontario also introduced a highly-unpopular HST on July 1 but there was no organized fight against it as seen in BC.)
