On July 13th, former NBC News foreign correspondent Dawna Friesen was named the new anchor of Canwest's nightly newscast, "Global National." She told a news conference in Toronto she was honored to take the chair and would bring a breadth of experience from 11 years spent reporting around the world. (Veteran host Kevin Newman stepped down in August after hosting the show for 10 years. Friesen, a native of Winnipeg, had worked at CBC and CTV before being hired by NBC. She was based in London since 1999, and has covered news events in Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and parts of Africa.)
