Canada relinquished command of Kandahar city to the Americans on July 15th amid an influx of US troops in Afghanistan. The Afghan province had been overseen by Canadians for four years. Lieutenant-Colonel Simon Bernard, the head of long-term planning at Task Force Kandahar, said it would be easier to focus attention on a smaller area. (Canada turned over the Zhari and Arghandab districts to the US two weeks earlier.)
