The Harper government announced an agreement to spend 16 billion dollars on new fighter jets -- without ever soliciting competing bids. Lockheed Martin will build 65 of its F-35 Joint Strike Fighters for the Canadian Armed Forces to replace the aging CF-18s. Defense Minister Peter MacKay said they were the right jets for the right price to do the right job. (The jet purchase and the accompanying long-term maintenance plan drew criticism from the Opposition because it was not subject to a competitive bid process.)
