A legislative committee concluded that British Columbians would hold a referendum in September, 2011 on whether the much-hated HST should be repealed. A petition against the tax drew more than 500-thousand signatures. The referendum is technically non-binding, but BC Premier Gordon Campbell said he would abide by whatever voters decided. (Campbell's government faced a growing firestorm of criticism after it announced the tax just weeks after winning an election in which it said it wasn't contemplating such a switch. Campbell later stepped down over the furor.)
