Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced October 12th that Ottawa posted a 55.6 billion dollar deficit in 2009, the biggest in Canadian history. Flaherty said Canada remained on track to balance the budget in just over five years. (The deficit was about 13 billion dollars more than the previous high in 1993-94.)
