On October 22nd, an Alberta judge accepted recommendations that oilsands giant Syncrude should pay three million dollars in fines and penalties for causing the deaths of 16-hundred ducks in a tailings pond at its northern Alberta oilsands mine. Company spokeswoman Cheryl Robb said the company would have to rebuild its reputation after the highly-publicized trial. (Syncrude's penalties included 800 thousand dollars in provincial and federal fines and 2.2 million dollars to improve bird monitoring and deterrence and help preserve wetland habitat for migrating birds.)
