Jonathan Duhamel of Boucherville, Quebec won the World Series of Poker title and 8.94 million dollars. He was the first Canadian to take the no-limit Texas Hold 'em main event in Las Vegas. Duhamel called it a "dream come true." (It was only two years earlier that Duhamel dropped out of university to pursue playing poker full time.)
