Five Canadian tourists and two Mexican employees were killed November 14th when a massive explosion ripped through the lobby of the Grand Princess Riviera Hotel in the city of Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The victims included an Alberta man and his nine-year-old son, and a BC man who had just been married at the resort. James Gaade (GAY'-dee), from Saint Catharines, Ontario said he was walking on the beach when he heard an explosion and saw smoke coming from the hotel. (Authorities initially said swamp gases produced by rotting vegetable matter trapped beneath the hotel might have triggered the blast, but suspicions later focused on a possible failure in a gas system.)
