It was a humbling election night for Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals as they watched Prime Minister Stephen Harper win a Conservative majority while NDP Leader Jack Layton propelled his party into official opposition status. It was the Liberal Party's worst defeat, winning only 34 seats. Ignatieff, who lost his Toronto seat, told party supporters not to feel defeated after such a hard fought campaign. (Ignatieff announced May 3rd that he was quitting politics.)
