On June 1st, military aircraft evacuated nearly all 1,200 residents as an out-of-control wildfire threatened the remote northern Saskatchewan communities of Wollaston Lake and Hatchet Lake First Nation. Saskatchewan Fire Safety Commissioner Duane McKay said military helicopters and cargo planes were used to airlift people to safety in Saskatoon. (No buildings were destroyed, but the flames burned to the edge of Wollaston Lake. Residents began returning on June 7th.)
