In a case that made national headlines and prompted an angry anti-police march, officers in Montreal on June 7th shot a homeless man, 40-year-old Mario Hamel, during a public disturbance. Passerby Patrick Limoges, 36, was also killed when he was struck by a police bullet as he was walking across the street on his way to work. Provincial police spokesman Claude Denis said they were called as a knife-wielding homeless man tossed around garbage. (Quebec provincial police were called in to investigate. They handed over their report on October 26th to Quebec's director of criminal prosecutions to determine whether charges would be laid.)
