Surging crowds burned cars, smashed windows and ransacked stores in downtown Vancouver after the Canucks lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final to the Boston Bruins. Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson said the rioters were not reflective of the city's population. (An independent report released on September 1st concluded police were overwhelmed by the massive and largely drunken crowd of more than 150,000 people who poured into the downtown core to watch the game on large TV screens. The force insisted there was no way to know trouble was brewing and there was nothing it could have done to prevent the riot.)
