A Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge ruled on July 6th that a case against the federal and Nova Scotia governments involving the Sydney tar ponds could proceed as a class-action lawsuit. Several plaintiffs argued their properties and health were harmed by exposure to contaminants from the former Sydney Steel plant. One of their lawyers, Scott Ritchie, called it a monumental day for the people of Sydney. (The case had the potential to involve tens of thousands of people.)
