New Democrat MPs unanimously backed rookie Quebec MP Nycole Turmel as interim leader for ailing leader Jack Layton, who took a leave of absence to fight cancer. The NDP's national council formally confirmed the appointment on July 28th. Turmel said she realized she was replacing an extremely popular leader. (Turmel belonged to the Bloc Quebecois for more than four years but discarded her membership just weeks before running under the New Democrat banner in the spring federal election.)
