Kathy Dunderdale became the first woman elected premier of Newfoundland and Labrador as she led the Progressive Conservative party to its third-straight majority government. The Conservatives won 37 seats, while the Liberals won six seats and the NDP five. Dunderdale said her grandmother would be proud of her accomplishment. (Liberal Leader Kevin Aylward was defeated in his riding, while NDP Leader Lorraine Michael won her seat.)
