The first-degree murder trial of a Montreal couple and their son in the deaths of four female family members got under way October 20th in Kingston, Ontario. The Crown told jurors the family, originally from Afghanistan, couldn't bear the "treachery" of their three teenaged daughters having boyfriends, so they drowned them along with the father's first wife. Outside court in Kingston, lead detective Chris Scott commented on the Crown's theory. (Three Shafia sisters, along with Shafia's first wife, were found dead inside a submerged car in June, 2009 in the locks of a canal in Kingston, Ontario.)
