The US Food and Drug Administration gave approval for Canadian researchers to begin human testing of an experimental HIV vaccine starting in January, 2012. The SAV001 vaccine was developed by researchers at the University of Western Ontario. University President Amit Chakma said researchers, pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions around the world had been trying to develop a vaccine for 30 years. (The SAV001 vaccine, developed by Dr. Chil-Yong Kang and his team with support from Sumagen Canada, has been shown to stimulate a strong immune response in preliminary toxicology tests.)
