Gitxsan Treaty Society hereditary chiefs in BC voted to officially reject the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project deal that its negotiator Elmer Derrik signed in December, 2011, which set off a storm of protest among its members. Gilbert Johnson -- who launched the protest on December 5th when he boarded up the office -- said the reversal by the group of chiefs was just one issue related to the blockade. (The agreement would have given the First Nation a seven-million-dollar equity stake in the pipeline project to ship Alberta oil to the BC coast for transport to Asia.)
